Eastern Conference

In September it would have been easy to assume what would happen in the East come the trade deadline. Mississauga would make moves for now while all other teams would look to build for next season. Well as of writing this the Steelheads are out of a playoff spot (they are now 8th), Oshawa has an 6 point lead in 1st and is bidding on next years memorial cup and Peterborough has some of the most tradeable assets and sits tied for 3rd with Hamilton who are also bidding on next years Mem Cup. The Steelheads have one 2 games in a row in regulation for the first time since September and share a lot of similiarities with last years Eastern Conference champs Niagara.

On top of all this if Windsor makes the OHL finals then the Eastern Conference champ automatically qualifies for the Mem Cup so there is added motivation to buy out east.

This is still a wide open conference. Oshawa will be hard to catch up top as I dont think anyone in their division is 6 points better then them between now and the end of the season unless major moves are made. If Mississauga gets its act together it could have a stronger 2nd half but there is no way they erase the deficit in front of them. The Central division has been a tire fire so far -17.

Oshawa Generals – Selective Buyers

The Generals are in an interesting position. They are running away with the Eastern Conference in a year that a Western Conference team is hosting the memorial cup but due to the Mem Cups centenial next season they are hosting to bid on that as well. They are a team built for next season but are in a position to make noise this year.

What general manager Roger Hunt has done so far with this team has been fantastic. He has maximized return on his assets in multiple trades. On defence he moved Jalen Smereck (a player I really like) to Flint for a 2nd a 2 4ths, a return that is very similiar to what Niagara got for Graham Knott. In 2 other trades he has brought in Alex Di Carlo from Flint for a 5th and Medric Mercier from Sault Ste Marie for a 4th and an 8th. Both players have played significant roles for the Generals this season for what has been one of the conferences best back ends.

With their OA situation set and an unlikelyhood that they would acquire an OA as it would force them to resind the rights to Tolvanen the Generals will likely just kick the tires on some '98s who would boalster their depth this season and help them peek next year.

North Bay Battalion – Selective Sellers

You have to give credit to Stan Butler for his ability to get the most out his teams year in and year out. They acquired Brent Moran in the offseason who offered enough stability in net to allow the Battalion to sit in 1st place in the Central Division. Mind you that is not much to write home about still they have taken advantage of the situation in front of him. Even now with Injuries to their number 1 and number 2 goalies they have not allowed it to crater the team.

Even though they are in 1st in their division the Battalion will not be buyers. They wont neccesairly have a fire sale but if an offer comes around where they get good value for an asset I could see them pulling the trigger.

They do have 5 '97s who could return next year as OA's so you may see one of them shipped out now if they feel the return would be greater then in the offseason.

Peterborough Petes – All in Buyers

Is this the year the Petes finally make a move and start cashing in the pleathora of draft picks they have been accumulating from the Ryan Spooner trade through to the Nich Ritchie trade?

Import Jonne Tammela has only played 2 games this season due to injury so his situation somewhat complicates things for GM Mike Oke. Still they have plenty of picks to move and have the young roster players to pick a big move if one is out there.

The Pete's are the Darkhorse of this OHL tradedeadline. If your mind is going to be blown this is the team that is capable of doing it, the only question is do they pull the trigger.

Tradeable High Draftpicks

Hamilton Bulldogs – Selective Buyers and Sellers

After a hot start that saw the Bulldogs race out to top spot in the conference early in the season they have slowed down as a result of the injury bug.

The Bulldogs are in a similiar situation to Oshawa as they are in position to make some noise in the Eastern Conference playoff picture but they have placed a bid on the Memorial Cup so they have to keep an eye on being strong next season.

Steve Staois has already made the biggest splash already this season when he picked up '98 born Will Bitten in a trade with the Flint Firebirds

An open OA spot and an improvement at the import spot are 2 potential areas of improvement for the Bulldogs. On top of that they have 5 '97s on their roster who could potentially return next year as OA's. This is one spot they may sell from if they feel they can get a better return than if they waited till the offseason.

Tradeable High Draftpicks

4 2nd round picks next 5 seasons

Ondrej Kachyna '15 draft pick eligible to be traded

Ottawa 67's – Selective Buyers

After traded Travis Konecny at last years trade deadline in a blockbuster the 67's have a significant amount of draft picks to work with. They have dipped into that cache earlier this year when they astutly picked up Tye Felhaber from the Saginaw Spirit.

With a strong group of 98's and enviable group of '99s and a promising quartet of '00s already signed the future is looking bright in Ottawa. If this team is looking to add it will be parts that will help next year or the year after when the 67's are looking to peak.

One player on their roster that will interest conteners, atleast those with some import flexibility is Arthur Tyanulin. While it would take a significant package to convince Ottawa to move him, he is someone that would be a boost to teams who have an opening or can make one at the import spot.

Overage Situation (2)

Tradeable High Draftpicks

Kingston Frontneacs Selective Selling

When Arizona decided to keep Lawson Crouse in the NHL it became a rebuild for the Fronts. With a young core of intriguing '99s and '00s however it has the potential to be a quick one.

The Fronts have already started to make some moves as they shipped out Spencer Watson to Mississauga for picks earlier in the season. They are still 1 over the OA limit but with aruably 2 of the most coverted overagers on the market. Both are among the tops at their positions among OA's and with plenty of OA spots open around the league the bidding could make things favourable for the Fronts.

Overage Situation (4)

Warren Foegele C

Sudbury Wolves Selective Selling

The Wolves started out hot this season but since their hot start they have had an assistant coach leave and have been besieged with suspensions. It looks like it will be another struggle for the Wolves to make the playoffs. On the bright side however is that 2015 1st round pick David Levin had seen his play pick up and 2016 1st rounder Owen LaLonde has been fantastic on the blueline. There are pieces there to make the hometown fans hopefull it is just a matter of completing the puzzle.

Overage Situation (2)

Import Situation (1)

Dmitry Sokolov '15 draft pick eligible to be traded

Tradeable High Draftpicks

7 3rds next 5 seasons

Niagara Icedogs – Full Rebuild

Full rebuild going on in Niagara after making last seasons OHL finals. They have already moved one piece in Graham Knott although it was for a somewhat underwhelming package compared to past trades.

There are a few intriging pieces like Ryan Mantha, Aaron Haydon and Johnny Corniel. Corniel however is a prime candidate to return as an OA next season so the Icedogs may be hesitent in moving him even with their dearth of draft picks.

Overage Situation (2)

Ryan Mantha D

Aaron Haydon D

Import Situation

Pavel Demin '16 draftpick ineligible to be traded

Ondrej Machala '16 draftpick ineligible to be traded

Tradeable High Draftpicks

Mississauga Steelheads – All in Buyers

Happy I have procrastinated in writting this preview. What a difference a week will make. The Steelheads widely considered the best team in the East on paper have struggled mightly to start the season. Nobody questioned the top end talent on this team but what may have been underestimated is the lack of depth on this team.

They traded for Spencer Watson although he was still recovering from injury. In his first 3 games with the Steelheads he has scored 6 goals and added 1 assist and has helped the fish win 4 in a row. With the tire fire that the Central has been the Steelheads will be in 2nd in no time if they reach their potential.

The are currently carrying 4 OA's so in a perfect world they would be able to find a taker for Damian Bourne although there may not be much of a market for him. From a buyers perspective the Steelheads will be looking to find depth players to improve their bottom 6 as they will need more scoring from that group if they have any hope of winning the east and challenging a team from the West.

Overage Situation (4)

Damian Bourne LW

Spencer Watson RW

Stefan LeBlanc D

Matthew Mancina G

Import Situation

Ville Saarijarvi '15 draft pick eligible to be traded
Jacob Moverare '16 draft pick ineligible to be traded

Tradeable High Draftpicks

3 3rds over the next 5 seasons

Barrie Colts – Full Rebuild

Teardown. Everything must go. Maximize your return on whatever asset that isnt in your long term plans can get.

If this team can get Jack McBain to commit for next season they will have a scary about of '00 talent on their roster from 3 players who were 1st round picks in '16. The funny thing about that is that last years team had 0 1st round OHL draft picks and only 2 2nd round OHL draft picks. So you know this team's brain trust knows how to exctract every last drip of value from it's later round assets.

With only 1 '97 on the roster this team may have room to added a '97 they may feel is undervalued by another organization and may benefit from a change of scenery. Other than that it should be all selling and their most appealing piece may be OA forward Anthony Stefano

Overage Situation (3)

Anthony Stefano LW

Roy Radke RW

Cordell James C

Import Situation

Tom Hedberg '16 draft pick ineligible to be traded

Tradeable High Draftpicks
1 2nd round draft pick in the next 5 years (multiple conditional based on Jack Tortora trade)
0 3rd round draft picks in the next 5 years

Western Conference

The West is loaded once again with 4 teams all in position to win the conference. Will those “buyers” find the deals they need to improve their lineup? Will the “Sellers” capatilize and give their title asperations for '17-'18 and '18-'19 a boost?

London, Windsor, Sault Ste. Marie and Erie are clearly the cream of the crop. Kitchener and Sarnia have been slowed by injuries and NHL graduation and have fallen behind the leaders. Owen Sound and Flint may not have the pieces that are coveted by the top teams but could find moves that will benefit their future. Saginaw and Guelph are in an interesting position where they are loaded with draft picks which allows them to be patient and wait for returns that contain more players rather than picks.

London Knights – Patient Buyers

This team is in the top 5 in the league in terms of talent at every age level on their roster except for '97s and '00's (but give that time). A great group of OA's, Argubaly the best '98s in the league and an continualy evolving group of stud '99s. This team will not be rebuilding anytime soon.

With Tyler Parsons graduating after this season the Knights will likely make a push while they still have a star goalie. A '97 forward or defenceman would be a nice addition but they dont want to make a move that will negativly affect the development of some of their younger stars. It will be interesting to see what they do. They have the assets to make a splash but the talent to be patient and selective.

Overage Situation

Owen MacDonald C
JJ Piccinich RW
Chris Martenet D

Import Situation
Janne Kuokkanen '16 draft pick ineligible to be traded
Olli Juolevi '15 draft pick eligible to be traded

Tradeable High Draftpicks

8 2nd round draft picks next 5 seasons
7 3rd round draft picks next 5 seasons

Windsor Spitfires - Reactive buyers

Memorial Cup hosts who have already been adding to their roster this season with the aquisitions of Sean Day and Graham Knott. While they dont have the assets to compete with the Knights they have done a good job of hitting the market before it gets crazy and getting good value in the Day and Knott trades.

The Spits have a loaded roster now and are likely only looking for tweeks. That said if a few Western rivals make some big moves we could be looking at an all out arms race.

Overage Situation (4)

Jeremiah Addison LW
Cristiano DiGicinto LW
Patrick Sanvido D
Jalen Chatfield D

Import Situation
Julius Nattinen '15 draft pick eligible to be traded
Mikhail Sargachev '15 draft pick eligible to be traded

High Tradeable Draftpicks

2 2nd round draft picks next 5 years
4 3rd round draft picks next 5 years

Erie Otters - Potential Sellers

Once again the Erie Otters are battling the London Knights for the division. After 3 straight 50 win seasons they are primed for a 4th and this is after playing the first third of the season without their best player Dylan Strome. This would make it seem like a no brainer that they would be buyers at the deadline but I am not so sure.

The Otters have almost no tradeable high draft picks after 3 seasons of great hockey. But their roster is loaded with '98, '99 and '00 born talent so they have the assets to make a move if needed. The question is if there is a trade out there that jusifies the cost of their young talent. When managing assets extracting value at all levels is important and all teams what the best return possible for the price they pay.

In my opinion the Otters are actually better positioned to win the West next season then they are this year and if the right trade is out there for Strong and Debrincat (both draft picks and '98 and '99 born talent) then I can see the Otters listening/exploring those options.

Overage Situation
Kyle Pettit C
Darren Raddysh D

Import Situation
Erik Cernak '15 draft pick eligible to be traded
Gera Poddubnyi '16 draft pick ineligible to be traded

High Tradeable Draftpicks
0 2nd round draft picks next 5 seasons
2 3rd round draft picks next 5 seasons

Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds - Selective Buyers

The Greyhounds are a very enjoyable team to watch and they are coming off of a 10 game winning streak in which captain Blake Speers did not play in due to a broken wrist.

The Hounds have a forward group that in terms of talent and depth rivals that of London. They have an evolving and developing duo between the pipes and I for one am a huge fan of their blue line. While they could use some more size I love how slippery and agile this group is at avoiding the forecheck and buying extra time before breaking out and kick starting the offence.

The Hounds have an open OA spot on their team and while there are plenty of options in that market the team may lean towards aquring a '97. With only Hayden Verbeek slated to return next year as an OA it may make more sense for the Hounds to target an upgrade in that age group from a value perspective.

Overage Situation (2)

Bobby MacIntyre LW

David Miller C

Import Situation

Otto Makinen '16 draft pick ineligible to be traded

Gustav Bouramman '14 draft pick eligible to be traded

High Tradeable draft picks

2 2nd round draft picks next 5 seasons
4 3rd round picks next 5 seasons

Kitchener Rangers – Sellers

The Rangers were in a group that was considered to be the cream of the crop from the west at the begining of the year. While they havnt been a disappointment they have clearly been passed by the 4 teams ahead of them. Add to that some long term injuries that have come their way and it may be in this teams best interest to move some pieces.

In fact Jeremy Bracco may be the the piece that has the biggest impact on the market. Winding up in London or Sault Ste Marie could cause the Spits to sweat a little and look to make a few trades. That scenario could push Erie to sellers themselves and make them expolre deals for Strome and Debrincat to augment their roster for next year. They also need to move an OA which will bring more assets to the team. They have a strong core of '99s and '00s so it shouldnt be long before the Rangers and challenging in the West again.

Overage Situation
Darby Llewellyn LW
Dylan Di Perna D
Frank Hora D
Dawson Carty G

Import Situation

Lias Anderson (playing in Sweden) '16 pick ineligible to be traded

Cedric Schiemenz '16 pick ineligible to be traded

High Tradeable Draftpicks

4 2nd round picks next 5 years
3 3rd round picks next 5 years

Owen Sound – Selective Sellers

With Michael McNiven in net the Attack are capable of upsetting almost any team in the West but do they have the pieces around him to go any deeper? They have made one move already in December acquiring '98 born Chase Campbell from Ottawa. These are the types of buys I see them making. Aquiring players with control who may be undervalued by their teams. Subsequintly the Attack could move some of their older pieces although a strong playoff push may benefit this maturing lineup.

Overage Situation

Matt Schmalz RW
Justin Brack LW
Santino Centrome D

Import Situation

Petrus Palmi '14 draft pick eligible to be traded
Maksim Sushko '16 draft pick inelible to be traded

High Tradeable draft picks

9 2nd round draft picks next 5 seasons
3 3rd round draft picks next 5 seasons

Sarnia Sting Selective Sellers

Given that the Sting have 3 junior eligible players from last years team playing in the NHL the Sting have done well to be in the position they are in. If they can get 2016 1st round pick Tyler Weiss to commit they could be ready to make a push next season in the West.

With 2 '96 born and 3'97 born defenders on their roster you can expect the Sting to target blueliners in the '98 and '99 age range at the deadline if they move some of their intriging pieces.

Kevin Spinozzi is one player who could make a difference on a condending team and '97 born Nikita Korostelev could bring quite a return but it is no guarantee he signs with the Maple Leafs and could be an OA candidate next season.

Overage Situation

Jaden Lindo RW
Jeff King D
Kevin Spinozzi D

Import Situation
Adam Ruzicka C
Filip Helt LW

High Tradeable Draftpicks

3 2nd round draftpicks next 5 seasons
4 3rd round draftpicks next 5 seasons
(Sarnia will have some conditional picks from the Konecny trade returned but not till Konecny is ineligible to be returned to the OHL)

Flint Firebirds – Selective buyers

With plenty of draftpicks and a burgeoning cupboard of intriguing young skaters the Firebirds have the opportunity to be patient at the deadline. They have a few spots they could upgrade at for next season and a few pieces that teams covet but making the playoffs would have a tangible benefit for this team as they head into next season.
One area of surplus on the Firebirds is their '97s they have quite a few who could return next year as OA's so moving one now at a premium price might be too good to pass up.

Overage Situation

Everett Clark C
Alex Peters D
Mathieu Henderson D

Import Situation
Michal Steinocher '16 draftpick ineligible to be traded

High Tradeable Draftpicks
8 2nd round draftpicks next 5 seasons
10 3rd round draftpicks next 5 seasons

Saginaw Spirit – Selective Sellers

The Spirit have been stuck in mediocrity for too many years now. They always seem to have a quality group of young talent to build around but the pieces never seem to fall together to allow them to take the next step in the Jr hockey competative cycle.

After an atrocious start to the season the Spirit have already made some moves the main one being the trade of former 1st round pick Tye Felhalber to Ottawa. Mitchell Stephans is one of the big fish that could be availible at the deadline. Saginaw could likely fetch a '16 1st round pick for Stephans once that perticular trade window opens up in the new year (they will have to wait that long anyways since he will be playing for team Canada at the WJC)

Overage Situation

CJ Garcia D
Hayden Hodgson RW
Kris Bennett C

Import Situation
Markus Niemelainen '15 draft pick eligible to be traded
Filip Hronek '16 draft pick eligible to be traded

High Tradeable Draftpicks
9 2nd round draft picks next 5 seasons
8 3rd round draft picks next 5 seasons

Guelph Storm – Selective Sellers

While the Guelph Storm are a steaming turd sandwhich for the second season in a row there is a lot to be excited about. The Storm currently have 6 '97 born players who could entice other teams. Garret McFadden would likely fetch the highest return. Some OHL teams who are primed to compete next year may call on Givani Smith who would be an impact player for 2 seasons. Another member of the Storm who could be coveted is Nic Sicoly. The former 4th round pick could benefit from a change of scenery and brings a type of energy that is coveted on a teams bottom 6 come playoff time.

If the Storm were to move some of their '97s I could see them making a play to add another OA to their roster especially if the moves affect their blueline.

Overage Situation (1)

Liam Herbst G

Import Situation

Dmitri Samorukov '16 draft pick ineligible to be traded

Albert Michnac '16 draft pick ineligble to be traded.
